Shannon Sarmiento,MSN, RN, FNP-BC

Shannon Sarmiento has worked at City of Hope since 2007 as a registered nurse in different departments including, surgery and inpatient. In 2019, she completed her education and became a licensed nurse practitioner.

When she was younger, Sarmiento’s mother was a patient at City of Hope, and she was able to see firsthand how everyone treated them like family with encouragement, guidance and genuine care. After becoming a registered nurse, she knew she wanted to be part of the team of clinicians at City of Hope who help support patients and see their resilience. Sarmiento also knows how the whole family is affected when facing life-changing events, such as a cancer diagnosis. This understanding drives her close connection to her patients and she wants them to trust that they are in the right place for their cancer care. 

As an oncology nurse practitioner, Sarmiento is part of a multidisciplinary team focused on managing individualized treatment plans for cancer patients. Sarmiento applies her skills, knowledge and positive attitude to provide care to patients with all cancer types, with a focus on breast cancer patients.

Among Sarmiento’s focus is complex wound care ranging from wound care for radiation patients, ostomy teaching and wound vac application. She is responsible for continuity of care, throughout diagnosis, treatment and survivorship. And she’s also passionate about patient education.

“I believe it is important for my patients to understand their disease and treatments,” she says. “Through open and continuous communication, I get to know my patients, explain all of their treatments and answer any questions they may have.”

Sarmiento graduated from Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Illinois, with a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. She obtained a Master of Science degree in nursing from Alverno College in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and became a certified family nurse practitioner. She continues to broaden her knowledge through her membership with the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, Oncology Nursing Society and American Nurses Association.

Family life keeps Sarmiento busy outside of City of Hope. On the weekends, Sarmiento, her husband and their four young children enjoy movie marathons together. She also enjoys baking sessions with her kids.
