- About Me
Salila Hashmi, MD, joined City of Hope Atlanta in September 2023 as a Surgical Oncologist. She is a surgical expert in the treatment of complex gastrointestinal, hepatopancreatobiliary and peritoneal surface malignancies, including use of hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). Dr. Hashmi launched the University of Alabama’s HIPEC program during her time at its Heersink School of Medicine—the only program in the state of Alabama.
After earning her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from Aga Khan University in Karachi, Pakistan, Dr. Hashmi moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where she completed a postdoctoral research fellowship in transplantation immunology at Emory Transplant Center. After completing a general surgery residency and a critical care fellowship at Emory University School of Medicine, she travelled to Alberta, Canada, where she completed fellowships in hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) surgery and complex general surgical oncology at the University of Calgary.
Born and raised in Pakistan, Dr. Hashmi moved to the United States in 2011 and considers Georgia her “home state” in America. She joined City of Hope Atlanta to return home and to expand the expertise of our multidisciplinary team.
The diseases she treats include:
- Pancreas cancer, pancreas cyst, pancreatitis
- Liver tumors (primary and/or metastatic, including cancer of the bile ducts)
- Gallbladder cancer
- Appendix cancer, appendiceal mucinous neoplasms
- Colon cancer, including stage 4 disease
- Peritoneal mesothelioma
- Pseudomyxoma peritonei
- Neuroendocrine tumors
- Stomach/gastric cancer
- Sarcoma
Throughout her career, Dr. Hashmi has earned numerous awards, most recently, in 2022, being named Patient Experience Leader for the University of Alabama at Birmingham. A devoted physician scientist, Dr. Hashmi is widely published, has presented at a number of meetings and serves as a reviewer for several medical journals. She is also a member of various organizations, including the American College of Surgeons, Society for Surgical Oncology and America’s Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (AHPBA).
