Gynecologic Cancer Program

Our program

The Gynecologic Cancer Program at Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA), Chicago, specializes in treating women with cancer of the reproductive organs. Our multidisciplinary team of board-certified gynecologic oncologists, surgical oncologists and radiation oncologists work together with supportive care clinicians and with our patients to deliver quality clinical care with a patient-centered approach.

Our Gynecologic Cancer Program treats all gynecologic cancers including cervical, endometrial (uterine), fallopian tube, gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD), ovarian, vaginal and vulvar.

Treatment for women diagnosed with a gynecologic cancer typically depends on many factors, such as the type and stage of the disease, the potential side effects, the woman’s overall health and age, and whether she plans on having children in the future. Treatment options include:

As a gynecologic cancer patient exploring treatment options at CTCA® Chicago, you’ll meet with a board-certified gynecologic oncologist, who oversees the various aspects of your care, and other members of your multidisciplinary care team. Using evidence-based medicine, your gynecologic oncologist will develop a unique treatment plan tailored to your specific diagnosis. Your treatment plan may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation or another appropriate therapy, or a combination of two or more of these.

Chemotherapy deliver techniques

We also offer two sophisticated treatments: intraperitoneal chemotherapy and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). With these methods of delivering chemotherapy, treatment is administered into the patient’s abdominal cavity to directly target cancerous cells.

A comprehensive team approach

The Gynecologic Cancer Program at CTCA Chicago is committed to a multidisciplinary approach to care. After diagnosis, each patient is evaluated by a board-certified gynecologic oncologist, who then helps build the team by choosing which experts should be involved. The entire team, including supportive care clinicians, dedicated to helping patients prevent, anticipate and manage side effects, consults with one another on the range of treatment options and side-effect management tools available. Then, the doctors and clinicians work with the patient as a team, to develop a treatment plan designed to achieve pre-established goals.

This collaborative, personalized approach allows us flexibility along the treatment journey, while also fostering an environment where experts in a variety of disciplines work together, all under one roof. New options may arise or different goals may be proposed during the course of treatment. We monitor the patient throughout treatment and adjust the care plan as needed.

The CTCA national tumor board, a panel of experts who meet regularly to review and discuss each patient's treatment and monitor progress, helps enhance collaboration among physicians, especially in complex cases.

Integrative cancer care

As a patient at the Gynecologic Cancer Program at CTCA Chicago, your team also works closely with other supportive care clinicians to help manage additional disease- and treatment-related side effects, such as nausea and vomiting. These supportive care experts may include a pain management physician, naturopathic provider, mind-body therapist and spiritual support provider.

We understand that certain cancer treatments, including chemotherapy, surgery and radiation therapy, may interfere with your fertility and prevent or complicate your ability to become pregnant. If you decide you want to preserve your fertility, we will explain potential oncofertility options before you begin treatment. If you’ve had treatments prior to coming to CTCA Chicago, we help you determine your options.

Uterine Cancer

"CTCA worked with me to accommodate my job schedule because I didn’t want to miss any work. I came in and did tests one day and then returned another day to get my results. I met with my care team and, most importantly, my gynecologic oncologist. Throughout the entire process, I felt I received thorough explanations, and I did not feel rushed when I had questions. "

Gynecologic cancer clinical trials

Our oncologists are committed to improving treatment options for gynecologic cancer patients. As part of that commitment, the Gynecologic Cancer Program at CTCA Chicago offers qualified patients carefully selected clinical trials in studying new treatment approaches like immunotherapy for cervical cancer and other innovative research.

Although clinical trials are not available to all patients, they may offer some patients options that would otherwise be unavailable to them. Your care team will discuss whether you qualify for any of our ongoing clinical trials, and if so, help you enroll.
