Mesothelioma care

DISCOVER OUR DIFFERENCE IN PERSONALIZED CANCER TREATMENT

At City of Hope, we understand that mesothelioma is a complex disease that requires expert care.
That’s why our multidisciplinary team of cancer experts will work with you to help you understand the complexities of the disease and the treatment options available to you. You’ll share in the decision-making process with your care team and, together, come up with a treatment plan personalized to your individual needs, preferences and goals. This patient-centered approach means we treat you the same way we’d want our own family to be treated.

How are we different?

Quality of life-focused treatments

Your multidisciplinary team of oncologists and supportive care providers works with you to develop a treatment plan tailored to your diagnosis and needs. Your treatments may include chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiation therapy and targeted therapy. Your doctor may recommend a pleurectomy, or decortication, which is the removal of the pleura that lines the chest wall on the side affected by the cancer. The pleura lining of the affected lung, the area between the lungs (the mediastinum) and the diaphragm are also removed. This may be performed to remove early-stage cancer or reduce advanced-cancer symptoms like shortness of breath or chest pain.

Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA) is now City of Hope®, joining forces to expand patient access to personalized, comprehensive cancer care.

Comprehensive team approach

Your mesothelioma care team works all under one roof. That means you have access to state-of-the-art cancer treatments and supportive care services, all in one location. Your treatment plan is coordinated by a care manager dedicated to orchestrating your schedule, communicating with the rest of your care team, getting your questions answered and helping you access your test results in a timely manner. Depending on your diagnosis and needs, your care team may also include a medical, surgical and/or radiation oncologist, oncology nurses and a variety of supportive care providers.

Whole-person care

Our doctors work with supportive care providers to deliver evidence-informed services designed to address the symptoms of mesothelioma and the side effects of treatment. Our patients can meet with a pain management physician to help reduce pain and an oncology-trained dietitian, who may recommend a personalized nutrition plan to address nausea and malnutrition. The goal of integrative care is to keep you strong so you can better tolerate your treatments and maintain your quality of life.

“I am passionate and excited about creatively treating oncology patients’ pain by focusing on their individual needs using leading-edge interventional procedures to decrease symptoms from pain management.”

Access to clinical trials

Clinical trials are critical tools researchers and doctors use to determine the safety and effectiveness of new drugs and therapies. At City of Hope, we’re committed to offering our patients innovative and new cancer treatments, including access to clinical trials when appropriate. These trials may provide therapies that are not yet widely available to qualified patients who have exhausted conventional treatment options or whose cancer is advanced or difficult to treat. Our cancer doctors and researchers will work with you to determine whether you qualify for a trial and, if so, help you enroll.
