Jessica Smith is a registered and licensed dietitian in the Nutrition and Metabolic Support Department at Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA), Tulsa. Smith provides nutrition therapy for both inpatients and outpatients. She takes a proactive approach to patient care, working closely with patients to teach proper nutrition before, during and after cancer treatment to address nutritional deficiencies and reduce side effects.
Smith joined CTCA® full-time in June 2005. Since then, she’s helped patients maintain adequate nutrition, so they’re able to tolerate cancer treatments and avoid interruptions. “My overall goal is to help patients enjoy a good quality of life while undergoing cancer treatment,” says Smith. “I am committed to health care innovation and incorporating evidence-based research into my practice to benefit our patients.”
Smith earned a master’s degree in healthcare administration and a bachelor's degree in nutritional sciences from Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The integrated approach at CTCA is what drew Smith to the facility shortly after graduation. “I work closely with physicians and other clinicians at CTCA to ensure our patients experience seamless and personalized cancer care,” says Smith.
At the hospital in Tulsa, Smith works mostly with gastrointestinal and head and neck cancers. She administers several treatments to address nutritional support, including enteral and parenteral nutrition (tube feeding and bypassing the digestive system by providing nutrients directly into a vein). Smith’s leadership and experience is evident in her work. She has created educational materials for oncology patients, as well as implemented a wellness program for the employees at CTCA.
Outside of CTCA, Smith enjoys spending time with friends and family. She loves animals and has two dogs.
Patient ratings and comments
Star ratings and comments are only available for medical, radiation and gynecologic oncologists. Gynecologic surgical offerings are not included at this time due to a different survey tool required to evaluate these services. CTCA uses a validated Press Ganey® survey, which captures patient experience feedback for the primary oncology services of chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Following industry best practice, star ratings and comments are only published for physicians with a minimum of 30 completed patient surveys.
