Carl Frizell first witnessed the commitment to compassionate care at Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA) during a clinical rotation as a student. “I was so impressed,” he says.

Now, as Medical Oncology Physician Assistant at CTCA® Atlanta, he maintains that same standard with his own patients. “I take time to connect with my patients because I want them to receive optimal care,” says Frizell.

Frizell joined CTCA in March 2016. Focused mainly on gastrointestinal cancers, he works closely with patients to assess their condition, obtain medical history, review test results, and perform physical exams. He provides input for treatment recommendations, and continues to monitor patients during chemotherapy and other treatments. He also provides information on the latest advances in care, such as immunotherapy. “My goal is for our patients to live life as normally and fully as possible,” says Frizell. “I want them to be happy and healthy.”

Frizell is a certified physician assistant through the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants. He is a member of the Association of Physician Assistants in Oncology, the American Academy of Physician Assistants, the Georgia Academy of Physician Assistants, and American Society of Clinical Oncology.

Prior to becoming a physician assistant, Frizell worked as a Graduate Research Assistant for the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), where his studies also focused on genetics and genomics, disease biology, and cancer biology. After completing a Master of Science in Basic Medical Sciences in Pathology, Frizell worked as a laboratory facilitator, which allowed him to work with local high school students on educational experiments.  As part of his physician assistant training at UAB, he completed clinical rotations in surgical oncology, emergency medicine, women’s health, internal medicine, and several other specialties.

Frizell’s personal connection to cancer inspired him to become a physician assistant: his mother battled with Stage IV pancreatic cancer. “I lost my mother in 2011 to pancreatic cancer, and it is now one of my life's missions to inform people about the severity of all cancers so no one else will have to experience the pain that my family faced during this difficult time,” Frizell states. “Fighting cancer is a team approach, and everyone plays a key role in decreasing cancer deaths each day.” Frizell has been an active volunteer for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network for over five years, and he served as the Social Media Administrator for the Birmingham Affiliate before relocating to Georgia.

Outside of CTCA, Frizell mentors students interested in medicine, volunteers with cancer advocacy groups, attends church, participates in community activities, and is an avid baker.

Patient ratings and comments

Star ratings and comments are only available for medical, radiation and gynecologic oncologists. Gynecologic surgical offerings are not included at this time due to a different survey tool required to evaluate these services. CTCA uses a validated Press Ganey® survey, which captures patient experience feedback for the primary oncology services of chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Following industry best practice, star ratings and comments are only published for physicians with a minimum of 30 completed patient surveys.
