Surgical Oncologist Dr. Vasilena Zheleva joined Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA) in Phoenix, Arizona in September 2018 to be part of a team of doctors and clinicians delivering personalized cancer care. Originally from Bulgaria, Dr. Zheleva is dedicated to patient-centered cancer care.

“At CTCA®, we don’t just focus on treating the disease,” says Dr. Zheleva. “Rather, we focus on the patient and their loved ones to provide care and support with science and soul.”

Dr. Zheleva uses the latest advances in surgical care, including robotic surgery. When possible, she uses minimally invasive surgical techniques to help reduce postoperative pain and improve recovery.

Dr. Zheleva received a bachelor’s degree at Colby College in Waterville, Maine. She earned a medical degree from the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth in Hanover, New Hampshire. Dr. Zheleva completed a general surgery residency at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia. She then completed a rigorous fellowship in complex general surgical oncology at City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte, California, a designated comprehensive cancer center by the National Cancer Institute.

Throughout her education, Dr. Zheleva has won several awards for academic achievement. Dr. Zheleva has an interest in clinical research and has contributed to several published articles, abstracts and posters on multiple topics including breast cancer, biomarkers and signaling pathways. She has also given oral presentations and lectures of her work at professional meetings.

Outside of CTCA, Dr. Zheleva likes spending time with her friends and family. She also enjoys outdoors activities such as hiking, running and biking.

Star ratings and comments are only available for medical, radiation and gynecologic oncologists. Gynecologic surgical offerings are not included at this time due to a different survey tool required to evaluate these services. CTCA uses a validated Press Ganey® survey, which captures patient experience feedback for the primary oncology services of chemotherapy and radiation therapy at our comprehensive care and research centers.
