I think one of the most important aspects in helping patients recover is to consistently address their concerns and expectations all the while providing encouragement, understanding, compassion and education.

“I can emphatically say I love taking care of our patients,” says Susan D. Sears-LeClair, a gastroenterology physician assistant at Cancer Treatment Centers of America ® (CTCA), Chicago.

Sears-LeClair provides inpatient and outpatient care for patients who suffer from a variety of gastrointestinal complaints. These may include symptoms stemming from a gastrointestinal, pancreatic or hepatic cancer, the side effects of cancer treatments, or any non-cancer-related GI problem, ranging from malnutrition, inflammatory bowel disease or bowel obstructions. She provides evaluations in the hospital’s outpatient clinic, as well as in the inpatient setting.

Sears-LeClair works closely with the gastroenterologists, hospitalists and the entire health care team to bring cohesive care to her patients. While the gastroenterologists are performing procedures or seeing patients in the clinic, she is responsible for determining and managing care for their inpatients.

“Throughout patients’ hospitalization, I not only provide medical care and wound care, but also education to help patients and their loved ones through the course of recovery," she notes. "This helps them feel more in control during their healing process.”

Prior to working as a gastroenterology physician assistant at CTCA®, Sears-LeClair worked with the surgical oncology team, providing inpatient and outpatient care for patients who either underwent or were about to undergo surgery.

Sears-LeClair takes time to listen to patients, comfort them and address their concerns.

Sears-LeClair earned a master’s degree in physician assistant studies from Midwestern University in Downers Grove, Illinois. She graduated summa cum laude from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois with a bachelor’s degree in psychology.

Upon graduating from Midwestern University in 2006, Sears-LeClair gained experience as a physician assistant working as a first assist for a cardiothoracic surgeon, and as a primary care provider in a family practice.

Patient ratings
Star ratings and comments are only available for medical, radiation and gynecologic oncologists. Gynecologic surgical offerings are not included at this time due to a different survey tool required to evaluate these services. CTCA uses a validated Press Ganey® survey, which captures patient experience feedback for the primary oncology services of chemotherapy and radiation therapy at our comprehensive care and research centers. Following industry best practice, star ratings and comments are only published for physicians with a minimum of 30 completed patient surveys.
