A board-certified Medical Oncologist and Hematologist-Oncologist at Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA) in Philadelphia, Dr. Sramila Aithal provides patient-centered cancer care as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Dr. Aithal is board certified in internal medicine and medical oncology. She earned a medical degree from Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Medical College (Bangalore University) in Bangalore, India. Following medical school, she completed two years of post-graduate training in obstetrics and gynecology as a Diplomat of the National Board.

Dr. Aithal completed a residency in internal medicine at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. In her fourth year, Dr. Aithal served as a Chief Resident, overseeing one of the largest internal medicine residency program. After her residency, Dr. Aithal completed a fellowship in hematology/oncology at Maimonides Medical Center. In her third year, she earned the distinction of Chief Fellow.

Dr. Aithal has extensive clinical experience in the management of solid organ tumors and hematological malignancies.

Since joining the Department of Medical Oncology at our Philadelphia hospital in July 2008, Dr. Aithal says she appreciates the approach to patient care at CTCA®—to treat the whole person, not just the disease, as well as the patient-centered care philosophy.

Her role includes carrying out her passion, which is treating patients with all stages of breast cancer, early stage and advanced. She also has expertise in treating other cancer types.

“I believe in treating individual patients with insight into their care and a healthy understanding using available evidence-based data,” says Dr. Aithal. “I feel this approach offers hope for patients to manage their cancer with a good quality of life and lower levels of toxicity,” she adds.

Most importantly, Dr. Aithal says she advocates personalized and innovative cancer care since “cancers of the same origin behave in different ways, clinically, biologically, socially, molecularly, and genetically. Precision medicine and targeted therapies are expanding treatment options for cancer and offering patients treatments that are based on their unique molecular characteristics. It is exciting to be practicing cutting-edge oncology in this era,” she says.

In addition to her work at CTCA, Dr. Aithal says her family is very important to her. She is married and has a daughter. She is also greatly interested in women’s health issues, community services, music and spirituality, and conducts medical camps for the needy. “I have received and learned more from my patients than I could have possibly given. I look to make a difference in anything I do,” says Dr. Aithal.

Dr. Aithal is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society of Hematology, the American Medical Association and the American College of Physicians.
