“I am committed to communicating patients’ diagnoses as clearly as possible so that patients understand what they are facing,” says Dr. Mingkui Chen, a pathologist at Cancer Treatment Centers of America ® (CTCA), Chicago.

Dr. Chen works closely with medical oncologists to personalize cancer treatment. The information he provides helps our oncologists recommend the most appropriate treatment options for each patient. He applies the most advanced diagnostic techniques and utilizes cutting-edge laboratory diagnostic tools. The various lab tests he analyzes help our doctors accurately diagnose and stage cancer, plan treatments, monitor the disease and how treatments are working, and evaluate patients’ health.

Dr. Chen is certified by the American Board of Pathology. He earned a medical degree from Nanjing University School of Medicine in Nanjing, China. He went on to earn a PhD from the University of Maryland in Baltimore, where he subsequently completed a post-doctoral research fellowship.

Dr. Chen completed a pathology residency at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, where he served as Chief Resident. Additionally, he completed a surgical pathology fellowship at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland.

He has received multiple awards and honors, including the 2009 Resident of Year Award from Creighton University and a Regional Associate Member Award from the American Society for Clinical Pathology.

While at Creighton University, he taught a number of courses. And at the University of Maryland, he served as assistant professor in the Department of Neurosurgery.

His work has been published in medical journals such as Nature Medicine, The Lancet Neurology and the Journal of Neuroscience. He is a member of numerous professional associations, including the American Medical Association, American Society for Clinical Pathology and the College of American Pathologists.

Outside of CTCA®, Dr. Chen enjoys a busy life with his wife and two daughters, who are involved in activities such as piano, violin and volleyball. He also likes to fish and hike.

Patient ratings
Star ratings and comments are only available for medical, radiation and gynecologic oncologists. Gynecologic surgical offerings are not included at this time due to a different survey tool required to evaluate these services. CTCA uses a validated Press Ganey® survey, which captures patient experience feedback for the primary oncology services of chemotherapy and radiation therapy at our comprehensive care and research centers. Following industry best practice, star ratings and comments are only published for physicians with a minimum of 30 completed patient surveys.
