Dr. Jose March Maquilan is a Thoracic Surgeon at Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA). He joined the hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in June 2016. At CTCA®, Dr. Maquilan provides thoracic surgery care to patients with thoracic malignancies ranging from early to advanced stages.

Board certified in general surgery and thoracic surgery, Dr. Maquilan focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the chest through surgical treatment options. He specializes in video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) procedures and is an expert in robotic-assisted thoracic surgery. When possible, Dr. Maquilan applies minimally invasive techniques to diagnose and treat cancerous and noncancerous disorders of the lungs, chest, mediastinum, heart, esophagus and diaphragm.

“I was attracted to the compassionate and patient-centered care that is provided at Cancer Treatment Centers of America,” says Dr. Maquilan. “Working collaboratively in a multidisciplinary fashion, provides seamless whole-person care for our patients.”

A native of the Philippines, Dr. Maquilan received his medical degree at Cebu Institute of Medicine in Cebu City, Philippines. After moving to the United States, he finished an internship in surgery at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Dr. Maquilan then completed a residency in general surgery at Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia, which included a fellowship in shock and trauma and a fellowship in vascular surgery. Dr. Maquilan did a rotation in pediatric cardiothoracic surgery at Temple University Health Sciences Center in Philadelphia. He then went overseas to the Brooke General Hospital and Guy’s Hospital in London, England, to do a rotation in thoracic surgical oncology. Dr. Maquilan returned to Hahnemann University Hospital  and completed a residency in cardiothoracic surgery.

Dr. Maquilan has previously worked in a variety of health care settings. He has been published in well-known journals such as The Journal of Invasive Cardiology, American Heart Journal and Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Maquilan is a member of many professional organizations, including the American College of Surgeons, American Board of Thoracic Surgery and Society of Thoracic Surgeons.

Outside of CTCA, Dr. Maquilan enjoys spending time with his wife, family and friends. He is very proud of his son, two daughters and two grandchildren.
