Learn About Oral Cancer

Oral cancer, also known as mouth cancer, originates in the tissues of the oral cavity. Oral cancer most commonly involves the tongue. This cancer may also include the lips, the inside lining of the lips and cheeks, the teeth, the gums, the bottom of the mouth, and the bony roof of the mouth. Oral cancer comes in several types, but most are squamous cell carcinomas, originating in the soft and moist tissues that line the mouth and lips.

Oral Cancer Diagnostic Evaluations

Creating a personalized treatment plan begins with determining the stage, or progression, of your oral cancer. The stage of oral cancer is one of the most important factors in evaluating treatment options. Our pathologists and oral cancer experts use a variety of diagnostic tests to evaluate oral cancer, using that information to design an individualized treatment plan tailored to each patient’s needs and goals. These diagnostic tools may include standard-of-care and advanced imaging and laboratory tests to evaluate the cancer.

Oral Cancer Advanced Treatments

Each oral cancer patient’s treatment plan is tailored to that patient’s individual needs and treatment goals. Our multidisciplinary team of doctors and clinicians take the time to answer each patient’s questions and recommend treatment options based on his or her oral cancer type, stage and other factors. We target oral cancer with a wide variety of treatments, technologies and tools, including radiation therapy, surgery, chemotherapy and targeted therapy, though chemotherapy is typically reserved for patients whose disease has metastasized to other areas of the body.

Oral Cancer Supportive Care Services

Oral cancer patients often experience treatment-related side effects, including weight loss, fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, constipation and increased risk of infection. These side effects may inhibit patients’ ability to stay nourished. Your integrated care team may include a registered dietitian to help support healthy digestion and nutrition, and help you manage related side effects. Other supportive care clinicians are available to help you avoid delays in treatment and support your quality of life.
