Dr. Richard Schmidt serves as an orthopedic oncologist at Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA) Chicago. He specializes in sarcomas, which includes cancer of the bone and soft tissue, and metastatic cancer to the bone. He is known for his expertise in the surgical management of limb salvage surgery.

Dr. Schmidt graduated from Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine in 1980. He completed an internship, orthopedic residency and fellowship in orthopedic research at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in 1985. Additionally, Dr. Schmidt completed an orthopedic oncology fellowship at Shands Hospital at the University of Florida in Gainesville.

On September 30, 1987, Dr. Schmidt performed the first successful total knee transplant on a 32-year-old woman at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Without the surgery, the woman faced the amputation of most of her leg. Dr. Schmidt was featured in The New York Times (“Transplant of a Human Knee Is Achieved for the First Time,” November 25, 1987), among other media outlets, for this accomplishment.

Dr. Schmidt has been internationally recognized for his expertise in orthopedic cancers. An expert in the field for more than 20 years, Dr. Schmidt has been in private practice in Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania since 1993.

“What I like most about CTCA® is its positive attitude and positive outlook when dealing with the cancer patient. It’s a can-do approach. And the optimistic, positive, can-do feeling reflects back on the patient. CTCA is very ‘make it happen.’ That is refreshing,” says Dr. Schmidt.

Aside from his role at CTCA, Dr. Schmidt is also an attending surgeon at Lankenau Medical Center in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania.

Dr. Schmidt has been named a “Top Doctor” in Main Line Today Magazine for every year since 2007. The monthly magazine covers Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery counties. The magazine surveyed more than 1000 physicians county-wide, asking them to name their doctors of choice in 10 specialties, including cardiology, radiology, internal medicine, neurology, etc. Dr. Schmidt was nominated by his peers as the top doctor in orthopedics. He has also been named "Top Doctor" in Philadelphia Magazine since 2007 and was named a Philadelphia Magazine Top DocsTM 2016 Winner in the category of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Dr. Schmidt is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is past president of the Pennsylvania Orthopedic Society and a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, New Jersey Orthopaedic Society and the Philadelphia Orthopaedic Society.

Patient ratings and comments

Star ratings and comments are only available for medical, radiation and gynecologic oncologists. Gynecologic surgical offerings are not included at this time due to a different survey tool required to evaluate these services. CTCA uses a validated Press Ganey® survey, which captures patient experience feedback for the primary oncology services of chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Following industry best practice, star ratings and comments are only published for physicians with a minimum of 30 completed patient surveys.
