With a lifelong love of learning, April Szymanski has pursued advanced education for over 10 years. “Through my studies, I developed a passion for nursing and caring for others,” says Szymanski, Nurse Practitioner on the medical oncology team at Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA), Chicago.
Szymanski joined CTCA® Chicago in April 2018. She focuses on approaching each patient individually in order to treat the whole person. Her care aims to address a wide range of needs, while also educating patients so that they can be active participants in their care plan. Szymanski works toward this this goal by getting to know her patients and building a trusting relationship with them.
Szymanski feels at home delivering care at CTCA and enjoys the relationships she builds with her patients. “I believe that patients should be actively involved in his or her treatment decisions, and it is my responsibility to help my patients understand the information available, so they feel informed and confident in their care," says Szymanski.
Szymanski received her Bachelor of Science in physical education and exercise science from Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois. She went on to study at the Graduate School of Nursing at the University of Massachusetts in Worcester, Massachusetts, earning her registered nursing license. Szymanski then completed a master’s degree in nursing with a specialty in adult ambulatory nurse practitioner studies at the University of Massachusetts in Worcester. She is a certified Adult Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
Prior to joining CTCA, Szymanski practiced nursing for years at other hospitals and health care settings. She is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Association of Nurse Practitioners.
Outside of CTCA, Szymanski likes spending time with her friends and family. She enjoys running, biking, yoga, reading and cooking.
Patient ratings and comments
Star ratings and comments are only available for medical, radiation and gynecologic oncologists. Gynecologic surgical offerings are not included at this time due to a different survey tool required to evaluate these services. CTCA uses a validated Press Ganey® survey, which captures patient experience feedback for the primary oncology services of chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Following industry best practice, star ratings and comments are only published for physicians with a minimum of 30 completed patient surveys.
