Cancer Treatment Centers of America

TNM system for pleural mesothelioma

Making an educated treatment decision begins with the stage, or progression, of the disease. Using the results from your diagnostic tests, your care team at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) will develop an appropriate treatment plan for you.

If you have been recently diagnosed, we will review your pathology to confirm you have received the correct diagnosis and staging information, and develop a personalized treatment plan. If you have a recurrence, we will perform comprehensive testing and identify a treatment approach that is suited to your needs.

Currently, only pleural mesothelioma is described by the TNM staging system by the American Joint Committee on Cancer because the other types of mesothelioma are rarer. The TNM staging system for mesothelioma focuses on three important factors for understanding the spread and development of cancer.

TNM staging stands for tumor, the size and extent; nodes, the spread of the cancer through the lymph nodes; and metastasis, which describes the spread of the cancer throughout the body. Each factor is assessed and rated where 0 indicates there is no evidence of a tumor or spread and the increasing numbers correlate with increasing severity of that particular factor.
