Cancer Treatment Centers of America® at Southeastern Regional Medical CenterPatient Notification

Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA) at Southeastern Regional Medical Center recently learned about a security incident that may have involved certain personal information about some of our patients.

On May 15, 2019, we identified suspicious activity on a CTCA user’s email account. We promptly opened an investigation and retained a nationally recognized forensics firm to assist. It appears that on or about April 17, 2019, the CTCA user may have fallen victim to a “phishing” email and that it was possible for an unauthorized user to access information in the email account between April 17 and May 15, 2019. The CTCA user’s password was promptly changed at the direction of the CTCA Information Security Department, and the previous email credentials could no longer be used to access the email account. However, because we were unable to rule out the possibility that an unauthorized user accessed personal information, we are providing notice of this event. Information in the affected mailbox included patient names, and may have also included patient phone numbers, addresses, dates of birth, medical record numbers or similar identifiers, health insurance information, and/or medical information. No patient Social Security Numbers or financial information were involved.

CTCA will individually notify potentially impacted patients for whom it has a valid mailing address. Impacted patients are advised to regularly monitor any explanation of benefits and other account statements to check for any unfamiliar charges or items. If patients notice any services they did not authorize, they should contact their health plan.

We take our responsibility to safeguard personal information seriously and remain committed to protecting patient privacy and security. We are evaluating potential security enhancements and continuing to educate our workforce about how to identify suspicious emails to help ensure this does not happen in the future. If you have any questions about this situation, please do not hesitate to contact the dedicated assistance line at 844-944-2743, Monday to Friday 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM CST and Saturday and Sunday 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM CST, reference code A0103.
