James Grogan

Jim Grogan has extensive leadership experience in law, business, and working as a board member of both private and public companies. His duties as the President and CEO of a publicly traded company provided him important insights into the appropriate role of a productive board member. He is particularly skilled at articulating issues clearly and building consensus among fellow board members and senior management. Since 2014, Jim has been a National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD) Board Leadership Fellow. NACD Fellowship is achieved by successfully completing a comprehensive and continuous program of study that empowers directors with the latest insights into current governance issues and leading boardroom best practices. In 2020, Jim became a NACD Board Certified Director by completing the rigorous NACD certification process and passing the day long exam which has a 50% pass rate.

An attorney and successful businessman, Jim Grogan has a long track record of leadership in both public and private companies. In addition to serving on the National Board of Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA) and as President of the Board of CTCA® at Western Regional Medical Center, he is currently serving as a trusted advisor to a global private enterprise with substantial private equity investments, operating entities and real estate holdings. His duties include direct real estate and private equity investing as well as enterprise-wide operating company consulting, CEO coaching and talent mentoring, evaluation and recruitment.

Grogan is a recognized real estate investor and developer with expertise in a wide range of asset classes, both throughout the southwest and internationally.

In 2000, he was appointed by the Governor of Arizona to the Board of the Arizona Tourism and Sports Authority, a public body created to promote tourism and design, build, own and operate a $500 million multi-purpose convention facility and NFL stadium. Grogan was elected founding Chairman by his fellow Board members. He was also a member of the 2015 Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee.

From 2003 through 2007, Grogan served as the founding President and CEO of the Loreto Bay Company, the developer of an 8,000 acre, sustainable resort community in Baja, Mexico. Prior to joining Loreto Bay, Grogan was President of GW Holdings, a diversified real estate investment company and developer of The Rocks, Scottsdale’s first Private Residence Club.

In 2007, Grogan was asked by Stewart Horejsi, one of the largest outside shareholders of Berkshire Hathaway, to develop and execute a comprehensive strategic marketing plan to promote the progressive trust and tax laws of Alaska for Horejsi’s Alaska Trust Company.

Grogan also served as President of Sterling Financial/Samoth Capital where he was responsible for managing all aspects of this publicly traded, TSE company. Specifically, he coordinated Sterling’s real estate oriented merchant banking and hospitality activities.

From 1991 through 1996, Grogan was the Managing Attorney of Gallagher and Kennedy, a full service business law firm of over 90 lawyers in Phoenix, Arizona.

Passionate about using his business knowledge, Grogan has served on the Board of Directors for AMERCO, the parent of U-Haul International, Inc. He currently serves on the Board of Drees Homes, one of the country’s largest privately-held homebuilding companies.

Grogan is a cum laude graduate of both the College of The Holy Cross and the University of Cincinnati College of Law. He is very active in a wide variety of civic and charitable organizations.
