Ordained Minister – LOGOS Ministerial Institute

Rev. Tammy James felt called to join Cancer Treatment Centers of America ® (CTCA), Chicago, after treating at the hospital herself and providing a patient-empowered statement to the Board of Directors. “I realized that I wanted to help other patients find their own voice,” says Rev. James.

Rev. James received her minister ordination in 1991 from LOGOS Ministerial Institute in Chicago, and earned a degree in graphic art from Robert Morris College. She started her career at CTCA® in 2007, studying how prayer influences breast cancer patients. She later became a Chaplain at the hospital.

At CTCA, Rev. James provides spiritual support to patients, caregivers and other employees. She hosts regular prayer hour and worship services, in addition to meeting with patients before and after surgery. Rev. James feels she can relate well to patients and caregivers because of her own experiences with cancer. As a two-time cancer survivor, a caregiver to a family member diagnosed with cancer and a chaplain working directly with patients, Rev. James enjoys connecting on many levels with the patients and caregivers she meets.

Always on the search for ways to help patients feel comforted, Rev. James played a key role in starting a weekly karaoke program at the hospital and leads annual caroling at the “Holiday of Hope” tree lighting ceremony each December. She is also on the board for Assistance in Healthcare, a nonprofit that helps raise money for cancer patients and their families to pay for non-medical expenses.

When she is not at CTCA, Rev. James enjoys serving as the “minister of comedy” with a local church comedy team and speaking with church communities. She also enjoys spending time with her four grown children and her dog, Bella.
