In the oncology field, a breast surgeon is a physician who specializes in performing surgical procedures to biopsy and/or remove tumors in the breast. Used to diagnose, stage and treat breast cancer, and to manage certain cancer-related symptoms, breast surgery is often an integral part of a breast cancer patient’s treatment plan.
Breast surgeons at Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA) commonly perform lumpectomy and mastectomy procedures to remove or reduce the size of malignancies. Surgical oncologists may perform breast ultrasounds, minimally invasive MRI-guided breast and needle core biopsies, infusaport placements and laparoscopic breast surgeries. Breast surgeons may work directly with radiation oncologists to treat breast cancer using intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT). Also trained to remove neighboring lymph nodes, breast surgeons regularly perform axillary node dissection, sentinel node mapping and biopsies of sentinel lymph nodes. Breast conservation therapy, also performed by breast surgeons, includes lumpectomies and partial, nipple- and skin-sparing mastectomies. Oncoplastic surgeons perform innovative breast reconstruction surgeries such as tissue transfers, microsurgical flap procedures and anatomical implants.
