Mammography Suite at Western

At CTCA at Western Regional Medical Center (Western), we understand that a mammogram can be an emotional experience, and one that requires extra sensitivity. To meet the needs of our patients, we have built a state-of-the-art mammography suite where all breast imaging tests are completed with privacy and comfort in mind. This warm and comforting suite includes a private waiting room for you and your caregiver, an imaging room, an ultrasound and biopsy suite, and a consult room.
Following completion of all breast exams, the patient meets in the consult room with a board-certified radiologist to review the images. Our commitment is that all mammogram results are reviewed by a board-certified radiologist and discussed with you before you leave the suite.
Technology and Tools
If you are fighting breast cancer, CTCA offers the latest equipment specifically for breast imaging, such as computer-aided detection, which enhances analysis and treatment planning by providing a "second set of eyes" for the detection of cancer. In addition, side-by-side monitors allow the technologist to compare records from previous mammograms in real time with images being captured during the exam. The Imaging Team also uses the Suros ATEC Sapphire™ breast biopsy console, which allows for minimally-invasive tissue excision.
Once breast cancer has been detected, we develop a customized treatment plan and use the same diagnostic tools to monitor your progress, proactively making adjustments during the course of your treatment. In addition to Full-Field Digital Mammography, the following diagnostic tools are available for breast cancer:
- Breast Ductography: Also called a galactography, this specialized procedure is a type of mammography that uses a contrast injection to reveal the breast ducts.
- Breast Needle Localization: A needle localization is performed when an imaging scan reveals an abnormality in the breast. Using image guidance, a sample of breast tissue is removed.
- Computer Aided Detection (CAD): CAD systems use computer algorithms to read mammograms, which identifies potential areas for further evaluation by the radiologist.
- Intraoperative Ultrasound: A special type of ultrasound used during surgery to locate, evaluate and/or remove abnormal tissue in the breast.
- MRI Breast Imaging: This technology uses radiofrequency waves to create detailed cross-sectional images of the breasts. MRI helps us to identify tumors that may have been missed by a mammogram.
- MRI-Guided Breast Biopsy: This biopsy procedure uses MRI guidance to remove a sample of tissue that may not be visible with ultrasound or x-ray guidance.
