"People here at Cancer Treatment Centers of America have such a positive attitude. They understand the patients and caregivers, as well as the nature of the disease itself and the effects it can have on patients. It’s uplifting to see how the doctors and other clinicians work together to provide comprehensive care."

Dr. Walter Quan
Chief of Medical Oncology,

Dr. Walter Quan is thrilled to be part of the integrated team of cancer experts at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) at Western Regional Medical Center. Two of Dr. Quan’s former colleagues at the Medical College of Ohio (MCO) in Toledo, Edgar Staren, MD, PhD, MBA and Donald Braun, PhD, encouraged Dr. Quan to join the organization in March 2012.

The board-certified medical oncologist sees patients who have a variety of types of cancer, including melanoma, kidney cancer, lymphoma, gastrointestinal cancer and sarcoma. In particular, Dr. Quan is looking forward to a new treatment program being developed at the hospital which hopes to further immunotherapy options for patients with advanced cancer. In 2012, a series of immunotherapy clinical trials for kidney cancer and melanoma will be launched.

“If it’s possible to win on all fronts by making the cancer go away, minimizing side effects and helping patients have the best quality of life they can, that’s exactly what I will help them strive to do,” says Dr. Quan.

Dr. Quan earned a medical degree from Ohio State University College of Medicine in Columbus. He completed an internship, residency and oncology fellowship at MCO, where he also served as Chief Resident. Prior to studying medicine, Dr. Quan attended Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He graduated magna cum laude from the school with a bachelor's degree in English.

Dr. Quan was the first recipient of the prestigious Kay Anders Fellowship in Immunotherapy of Cancer at the University of Southern California/Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center in Los Angeles. He authored several chapters of the Handbook of Cancer Chemotherapy and has been published extensively in medical journals such as The Journal of Immunology and the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

Dr. Quan has presented on numerous cancer treatment topics at international and national clinical conferences. He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer and the American Association for Cancer Research.
