Naturopathic physician Dr. Shauna Birdsall provides customized naturopathic recommendations in conjunction with patients’ conventional oncology care at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) at Western Regional Medical Center (Western). Dr. Birdsall is the Director of Naturopathic Medicine at Western and provides clinical oversight to both naturopathic physicians and acupuncturists.

Dr. Birdsall earned a bachelor's degree from the University of California, Davis. She later earned a doctorate degree in naturopathic medicine from the National College of Natural Medicine in Portland, Oregon. Dr. Birdsall then completed a two-year residency training program in naturopathic medicine and oncology at CTCA at Midwestern Regional Medical Center (Midwestern). She is also a Fellow of the American Board of Naturopathic Oncology.

Prior to joining the Western team, Dr. Birdsall spent eight years as a naturopathic clinician at Midwestern. There, she collaborated regularly with other CTCA clinicians to research the use of naturopathic therapies in cancer care. Her focus was on the safe, effective use of such natural therapies as vitamins, minerals, botanical medicines, amino acids and homeopathic remedies to help improve patients' quality of life.

Dr. Birdsall joined the Western team upon the hospital's opening in December 2008. On a personal level, she understands the challenges cancer patients and their families face. Dr. Birdsall's grandfather had MALT lymphoma, her grandmother is a colon cancer survivor and her father had prostate cancer.

Dr. Birdsall is an author of several research studies presented at major medical meetings. She has also been published in the journal Integrative Cancer Therapies. She is also a member of the Oncology Association of Naturopathic Physicians, the American Society for Clinical Oncology, the Society for Integrative Oncology and the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians.
