Dr. Salman Malad, a medical oncologist at CTCA at Western Regional Medical Center, says of his role: “We at CTCA make every attempt on a daily basis to put patients and their needs first. We make sure patients are empowered to make decisions regarding their care.”
After earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology and life sciences from the University of California in Los Angeles, Dr. Malad studied orthotopic liver transplant patients as a clinical research associate in Thousand Oaks, California.
The year following graduation, Dr. Malad moved to the United Kingdom to attend medical school at the Kigezi International School of Medicine in Cambridge. He then returned to the United States, where he completed an internship in internal medicine at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City and a subsequent residency at Louisiana State University in Shreveport.
After completing his residency, Dr. Malad accepted a fellowship in hematology and oncology at Louisiana State University’s Feist Weiller Cancer Center. During this time, Dr. Malad published an abstract and delivered a presentation at the Annual Fellows Research Symposium on copper deficiency and pancytopenia resulting from gastric bypass surgery.
While at Louisiana State University, Dr. Malad worked as an evening and weekend internal medicine physician at a hospital in Shreveport, and with a hematologic/oncologic group.
Prior to joining CTCA, Dr. Malad served as the medical director for a hospice group and as a practicing physician with a medical oncology and hematology group, both in Knoxville, Tennessee. He holds board certifications in medical oncology and internal medicine.
When asked about his decision to join CTCA, he explains: “I came to CTCA because of the integrative approach to patient care. Our patients need more than just conventional treatment. I had not previously had resources available to me, such as naturopathic medicine, mind-body support, acupuncture, nutritional support, and other specialties that patients need in conjunction with their chemotherapy.”
According to Dr. Malad, CTCA is different than many cancer hospitals because of the emphasis on whole-person care, which entails patient and caregiver involvement in the treatment decision-making process. He states: “It is my job to inform patients about all of their options and let them make the decision that is right for them. I approach each patient’s care as I would for any member of my family.”
When he is not busy treating patients, Dr. Malad attends football and basketball games, as well as Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) events. He also enjoys traveling.
