Marcia Murphy, LCSW, mind-body therapist at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) at Western Regional Medical Center (Western), believes that: "Mind-body medicine can benefit a cancer patient by ensuring that the patient understands that he/she is not defined by the illness.”
Murphy earned a bachelor of science degree in business, economics and human resources development at the State University of New York, Empire State College in Saratoga Springs. For the years following, Murphy worked in human resources for several companies in New York. During this time, Murphy felt that she was called to change career paths and pursue social work.
In 2002, Murphy graduated from Roberts Wesleyan College with a master of social work degree. She accepted a position as a community-based clinician at a local children’s center. As part of Murphy’s role, she empowered families to stabilize during crises and prevent family disintegration using psycho-educational tools. Five years later, Murphy moved to Arizona where she served as a care coordinator for a healthcare company and as a social worker at a Phoenix-area hospital.
Murphy joined the Mind-Body Medicine Department at CTCA in 2010 after a deeply personal experience with cancer, “Two of my family members died from cancer. At only 31 years old, my brother died from malignant melanoma. I was not pleased with his care. I lost my father to cancer as well.”
Murphy chose to serve at CTCA specifically because she believes in treating the whole person – body, mind and spirit. She emphasizes, “I am committed to the Mother Standard of Care®.”
When she is not interacting with patients, Murphy enjoys communicating with her son, daughter-in-law and grandson via Skype as they currently live in Okinawa, Japan. She also enjoys playing golf, learning new social work skills and spending time with friends.
