"At Cancer Treatment Centers of America, I see my primary job as getting the patient through an acute medical illness or complication of cancer treatment so that they can be discharged and get back to working on a treatment with their primary oncology team as soon as possible."

Dr. Matthew W. Wright
Chief of Hospital Medicine

For Matthew W. Wright, MD, the ultimate goal for his patients is to make them feel better as soon as possible, while also working to effectively treat their underlying reason for admission. Dr. Wright always believes that his patients’ needs come first, which is why he wanted to work with Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) at Western Regional Medical Center (Western).

Dr. Wright joined Western in July 2012 as the Chief of Hospital Medicine. In this role, he supervises the full-time hospital medicine team at Western. Dr. Wright also participates in direct care by managing the entire hospital stay for acutely ill medical patients admitted to the inpatient unit, and provides medical consultative care to surgical patients admitted to the inpatient unit.

“At CTCA, I see my primary job as getting the patient through an acute medical illness or complication of cancer treatment so that they can be discharged and get back to working on a treatment with their primary oncology team as soon as possible,” says Dr. Wright.

Dr. Wright earned a medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia. He then completed a residency in internal medicine at the University of Utah School of Medicine in Salt Lake City.

While completing his residency, Dr. Wright joined the United States Air Force. After residency, he served as an internist stationed at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona.

“I enjoyed my time in the Air Force and am proud of the opportunity I had to take care of service members during wartime,” says Dr. Wright. “I still have a personal interest in aviation and space.” While in the Air Force, Dr. Wright received an Air Force Commendation Medal, an Air Force Achievement Medal and a Humanitarian Service Medal.

Prior to joining CTCA, Dr. Wright was the Medical Director of Hospital Medicine for a hospital in Montana. He is active in the Society of Hospital Medicine, American College of Physicians and American Medical Association.
