“My goal as a physical therapist is to serve patients and their families by giving patients the gift of increased physical function so they can accomplish and enjoy the activities they want to perform,” says Lisa Poormon. “I try to accomplish this goal daily, all the while having fun and laughing a lot with my patients.”
In November 2009, Poormon became a member of our oncology rehabilitation team at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) at Western Regional Medical Center in Goodyear, Arizona. She notes, “Joining CTCA has allowed me to accomplish my personal goals of patient-centered care on a much larger scale than I was able to achieve in my private practice.”
At CTCA, Poormon provides consultations to patients who have been referred by their doctors for physical therapy and rehabilitative services. She helps patients set personal goals for rehabilitation, and strives to help them meet those goals. What she enjoys most about her role at CTCA is spending one-on-one time with patients and making a difference in their lives.
Many patients who see Poormon deal with both physical and psychological fatigue during cancer treatment. Each week, she meets with these patients for two to three hours to help them build strength and endurance, improve mobility, optimize physical function, and relieve stress through various rehabilitative exercises.
“To help patients manage physical fatigue, I help them gradually increase the amount of activity they are able to perform, and I listen to patients to help relieve their mental fatigue,” explains Poormon. “They need emotional support and someone to talk with especially during intense, daily cancer treatments. Many are far from home and need someone who cares to listen. I am in a unique position to provide that support.”
Poormon holds a doctorate degree in physical therapy from the Arizona School of Health Sciences. She received a master’s degree in education and a bachelor’s degree in bio-med chemistry from Oral Roberts University.
Poormon is certified as a lymphedema therapist, as well as a clinical instructor by the American Physical Therapy Association. She specializes in lymphedema management and vestibular rehabilitation. But, she adds, helping patients to relax and laugh is equally her strong suit.
Previously, Poormon gained experience as the primary physical therapist and owner of two private practices.
Poormon devotes all of her spare time to her wonderful family. She has two children, Max, 13, and Ada, 5. She says her husband Vince allows her the freedom and support she needs to accomplish her dreams.
