“My role as a naturopathic physician is to support patients with their overall health,” says Laura Martell, a naturopathic physician and acupuncturist with Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) at Western Regional Medical Center. She provides safe, evidence-based recommendations for herbal medicine, vitamins, minerals, homeopathics and other nutraceuticals that help improve patients’ quality of life during cancer treatment.
Dr. Martell first became part of the Cancer Treatment Centers of America team at our northern Illinois hospital in June 2011. She then joined the cancer experts at our Arizona hospital in May 2012. She works with oncologist Dr. Walter Quan, in addition to a registered dietitian, registered nurse, mind-body therapist and care manager.
“When we work together as a team, with the patient in the center, the synergy created is incredibly supportive to patients and their families," says Dr. Martell. "We are more than the sum of our individual parts. Patients’ needs are really attended to and they are cared for on all levels—physical, mental, emotional and spiritual.”
Dr. Martell earned a doctorate degree in naturopathic medicine and a master’s degree in Oriental medicine from the National College of Natural Medicine in Portland, Oregon. She completed a naturopathic residency at a clinic in Beaverton, Oregon.
Dr. Martell and her husband, who is also a naturopathic physician, established and ran a multidisciplinary clinic in Portland, Oregon, where she also served as a naturopathic physician and acupuncturist.
She is a member of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians and the Oncology Association of Naturopathic Physicians.
Dr. Martell devotes her time outside of work to her two young children and husband. They love to go for bike rides, play at parks, go for hikes and stay active."Staying healthy myself, truly practicing the recommendations I provide to my patients, is vital to my well-being and the care I provide to patients,” says Dr. Martell. "I have seen patients use their cancer diagnosis for transformation and healing on many levels. There is always a reason to be hopeful.”
