Danielle Bach understands the importance of nutrition therapy for cancer patients. She joined Cancer Treatment Centers of America at Western Regional Medical Center (Western) to pursue her dual passion for nutrition and oncology. Her aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer in the 1990s and did not have all of the resources available to her under one roof like CTCA has to offer. Bach believes that her aunt may have had a better quality of life if she was able to receive this type of care.
“Cancer patients undergoing treatment can have as little as a 5 percent change in their body weight and, as a result, they are at risk for delaying treatment,” says Bach. “At CTCA, our patients see a dietitian from day one to help them manage any side effects from treatment and reduce the likelihood of significant weight changes.”
Bach is a strong believer in the Patient Empowered Care® approach to treating patients at CTCA. “All of the clinicians work together in one area and the patient stays in one room. I think this allows for better communication and less room for error. I like how the patient can feel empowered, because they’re given choices regarding their treatment.”
Each morning, Bach and her team – which includes an oncologist, nurse, naturopath and case manager – meet to discuss their patients’ care. “Here it’s all about the patient. People go out of their way to make sure our patients receive the treatment and the care they need.”
Bach’s goal is to be a resource in a world that is full of health information and medical advice, especially for cancer patients. “There’s a lot of health information out there and it can be confusing and overwhelming. I want to make sure I my patients have all of their questions answered and are provided with evidence-based nurition information.”
Bach most enjoys the difference that nutrition can make in a person’s quality of life. “Cancer patients often feel helpless,” she says. “Choosing to eat better is something my patients can do to feel empowered on a daily basis.”
A registered dietitian, Bach earned her Master of Science in clinical nutrition and her Bachelor of Science in dietetics from Florida State University. In her spare time, Bach enjoys hiking, running and riding her bicycle. She recently joined The American Society for Paraenteral and Enteral Nutrition.
