Treatments – Amifostine & Radiation Therapy
This video offers insight on the radioprotective drug amifostine. Radiation oncologists Dr. James Flynn and Dr. Douglas Kelly of Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) discuss how amifostine can be used as to help protect healthy tissues in the body during radiation therapy.
Dr. Kelly says, “Amifostine is given prior to every radiation therapy treatment, generally about 30 minutes before the session... It protects the healthy cells, but does not protect the cancer cells, against the effects of radiation.”
