Dr Leon: A gastroenterologist is a specialist in medicine that deals with diseases involved in the intestinal track. That includes anything from esophagus, the stomach, the colon. It also has to do with diseases involved in the liver, bile ducts, and the pancreas. As a gastroenterologist we get involved with anything that would involve those areas that I just talked about. For instance if you have problems with your esophagus, a swallowing disorder then a gastroenterologist is the one that would first step in and say “what’s causing the problem”, and often times then is going to use endoscopy which is direct visualization of the esophagus with a light. If you have a stomach problem then we also do the same thing. We use a light so we can examine the stomach, and we can take biopsies if necessary. We can go on a little bit further on an EGD it’s called which is an Esophagogastroduodenoscopy. Through that examination we can check the upper gastrointestinal track very well.
