In Her Own Words: Jara, Caregiver
In 2004, Jara McKean's husband Clair was diagnosed with prostate cancer. In this video testimonial, she recalls when they first received the news that Clair had cancer and how unimpressed they were by their doctor's bedside manner. Right away, Jara and Clair knew they wanted a second opinion. They sought it at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA).
Jara says, "The thing that I would say that's different about doctors at Cancer Treatment Centers is that they're willing to sit there and talk with you and really give you all of the background information regarding your illness. [They'll] really answer any question that you can come up with."

Jara McKean: My name is Jara and my husband’s name is Claire and he was diagnosed with prostate cancer.
The doctor just very ‘matter-of-factly’ told us, “I regret to inform you that you have very aggressive prostate cancer.” He was very matter of fact, not much emotion at all and basically what they told him was normally with prostate cancer there are three options, with you there’s only one and that was complete surgery.
We asked about a second opinion, “Do you mind if we get a second opinion?” And he seemed a little bit insulted about that. The thing I would say that’s different about doctors at Cancer Treatment Center, they are willing to sit there and talk with you and really give you all the background information regarding your illness and really answer any question that you can come up with. I don’t know if this is true of all men but a lot of men, when they go the doctor, when they come back, you don’t really know what the doctor said. They are not communicating as well as a lot of women do.
So there was no guesswork. I knew exactly what was going on, heard it from the doctor and then anything that was flying by him because he is so emotionally drawn into this whole thing, I knew the answers. Their hospitals, are so comfortable. They look more like a really nice hotel, the rooms basically are just so equipped to make you comfortable.
I am very thankful that there is a hospital; there is a choice like Cancer Treatment Center to take care of this type of life changing thing. I know so many people that have dealt with cancer and have not had the kind of facility, care and personal attention that we have had. The experience that we have had there with Cancer Treatment Center is unlike anything that I know of anyone else to be dealing with.
