Daniel Kellman: Naturopathic medicine has a vital role to play in the treatment of prostate cancer. One of the innovative therapies that we use here is TomoTherapy®, and also brachytherapy to the prostate. And one of the problems with those types of therapies is the potential for side effects to the lower bowel area, and also to the urinary tract. Naturopathically, we can actually do things to protect the lining of those areas while radiation therapy is being utilized to decrease side effects and decrease some of the discomfort associated with those therapies.
And then looking at the long-term prevention aspects with prostate cancer, there's a lot of things with nutrition and with naturopathic medicine that we're seeing now. For example, drinking green tea or taking certain antioxidants can reduce the frequency of recurrence with prostate cancer. There's also a lot of research now with vitamin D in being able to protect the bones and also looking at long-term immune system modulation to be able to prevent ongoing recurrences of prostate cancer.
