Daniel Kellman: Naturopathic medicine has a vital role to play in the concurrent treatment of colon cancer in the integrative model. Some of the agents that are used are 5-FU-based, or 5-Fluorouracil chemotherapy-based, regimens. For example, FOLFOX and FOLFIRI are very common regimens that are utilized in the treatment of colon cancer. That has a tendency to cause a side effect called hand-foot syndrome. We can use some very simple vitamins to be able to prevent that or at least reduce the severity of hand-foot syndrome. 5-FU can also affect the flora of the digestive tract, and we can use probiotics, for example, with that to keep the bowel flora healthy.
