Chuck Glenn - Esophageal Cancer Survivor

Chuck Glenn was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in early 2001. In this video, Chuck and his wife Ann recall their hopeful experience at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA):

"You have to have hope. As soon as you walk in the doors [of Cancer Treatment Centers of America], they make you feel like family. And they will do whatever they can and however aggressively you want them to do it. They said [to me] 'We can treat it and we can take care of it.' And that's what they did..."

Ann Glenn: The doctor says, “I would like to have his wife, his pastor and his two best friends present”, then you know you are about to receive really bad news. They looked very sad; they had their eyes down and they tell me that we needed to find a clinical trial, there really was not much that could be done for him.

The cancer was massive; it was stage 3. It was very serious; it was very grim and there was very little hope given to us at all. It totally shocked me because he was so healthy and I felt like I had just been punched in the stomach. I was stunned and I felt I didn’t know where to turn. I didn’t know what to do.

He was strong from the beginning. I was terrified and learned very quickly that fighting cancer must have a team approach to it. You have to approach it with people who will help you, not just give you treatment, and we saw an ad on TV for Cancer Treatment Centers of America and then almost simultaneously I was online searching for treatment options and I ran across Cancer Treatment Centers of America and that’s how we ended up.

And also we had never heard of Cancer Treatment Centers before – never. I was very surprised that they were so quick to help us. There was no delay. We will send you a packet of information and we can do a lot of this right now, with a telephone we can make you an appointment right now and most places won’t do that that quickly, and so I was very impressed and I felt like I had found somebody that could really help us.

Chuck Glenn: Somebody cared.

Ann Glenn: From the minute I talked to someone at the Cancer Treatment Centers of America I knew without a doubt that’s where we were supposed to be. It was an unbelievable experience for us. It was very difficult; it was very painful for him but we had such support, and I mean from everyone – from the nurses to the doctors to the housekeeping to transportation – everyone treated us like family. They didn’t treat us like a patient or like a number.

Chuck Glenn: No.

Ann Glenn: They treated us like we were family.

Chuck Glenn: We wanted to go at it aggressively to get in and out with, that’s what I was wanting. Let’s get in there, get it done, get it over with – let’s just do it and let me go on with my life.

Ann Glenn: When we went to the Cancer Treatment Center we were looking for medical care that would help us fight cancer not manage it, not just give us a few extra maths to his life but to actually fight it and beat it and that’s what we found.

I truly wondered when he had cancer if I would ever get him back, even if he survived the cancer if I would get the chap back that I knew before and I have him back – thanks to Cancer Treatment Centers of America. I have my husband back. There is life after cancer and it’s not just life there can be full, good quality abundant life after cancer.

Chuck Glenn: You have to have hope. As soon as you walk in the doors they make you feel like family and they are there for you and they will do whatever they can in that however aggressively you want them to do it. They said, “We can treat it and we can take care of it”, and that’s what they did.

Real Patients. Real Stories. Real Hope.

Do these videos feature real cancer patients?

Yes, the videos in this section feature real CTCA survivors with real stories to tell. These are not actors. They are cancer patients who came to CTCA and emerged as survivors. These stories are not scripted. They are personal accounts of people who found hope, and a voice, at CTCA. This is what they have to say, in their own words...

Why are some, not all, cancer types listed?

At CTCA, we treat individuals with a variety of cancer types. However, all of our survivors are not on film. If you don't see a survivor with the cancer type you're looking for, it only means we do not have a video at this time.

Keep in mind, we are continuously adding videos to this section. If you don't see the one you're looking for today, visit us again, or let us know how we can improve.
