What is Uterine Cancer?

Uterine cancer is cancer that begins in tissues of the uterus (or womb). Part of the female reproductive system, the uterus is the hollow, pear-shaped organ in a woman's pelvis where a baby grows during pregnancy. Uterine cancer usually occurs after menopause.

Types of Uterine Cancer

The most common type of uterine cancer is called endometrial cancer, because it occurs within the inner lining of the uterus, called the endometrium. A Pap test, also called a Pap smear, enables your doctor to view cells from your cervix through a microscope and determine if there are precancerous or cancerous cells in the lower part of your uterus. However, because cancer of the endometrium begins inside the uterus, it does not usually show up on a Pap test.

Uterine sarcoma is a much more rare type of uterine cancer, and forms in the muscles or other tissues of the uterus.

It is important to note that cancer of the lower portion of the uterus (the cervix) is called cervical cancer. It is diagnosed and treated in a different manner.
