Uterine Cancer Treatment: TomoTherapy®
Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) offers TomoTherapy®, a new, highly advanced form of radiation therapy that may be a treatment option for you. TomoTherapy® is an advanced form of Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), which integrates CT scanning and advanced radiation planning and delivery in one machine.
With TomoTherapy®, our radiation oncologists and treatment specialists can:
- Sculpt small, powerful and precise radiation beams to hit hard-to-reach tumors in the uterus
- Take detailed, CT images seconds before administering treatment; this helps to ensure that the radiation treatment is delivered to the tumor site, as precisely as possible
- Reduce radiation exposure to healthy surrounding uterine tissue, often dramatically
Unlike traditional radiation therapies, which can only project radiation from a few directions, the TomoTherapy® Highly Integrated Adaptive Radiotherapy (HI-ART) System® delivers precise and powerful doses of radiation onto tumors in the uterus from a full 360 degrees.
The system’s on-board CT scanner allows your CTCA radiation therapy team to obtain the most up-to-date information possible about the size, shape and location of your tumor in the uterus. This also allows CTCA radiation oncologists, medical physicists and dosimetrists to better plan your uterine cancer treatment, avoiding damage to the nearby normal tissue or organs.
TomoTherapy® may open new doors to treatment for uterine cancer patients who have reached their maximum tolerance dosage of traditional radiation. Additionally, it may be an option for those patients whose tumors in the uterus are far too difficult for other methods of radiation therapy to reach.
