Uterine Cancer Treatment: Biotherapy/Immunotherapy

Immunotherapy (sometimes called biological therapy, biotherapy or biological response modifier therapy) is designed to leverage the natural healing power of your body’s immune system. Immunotherapy can be used directly to fight uterine cancer. It can also indirectly aid your uterine cancer treatment by helping to lessen various, treatment side effects.

Treating uterine cancer via biotherapy is a natural extension of our integrative treatment philosophy at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA). By understanding and harnessing your body's power of protection, our cancer doctors are able to help you fight uterine cancer on as many fronts as possible.

One reason why uterine cancer may develop is because the immune system breaks down or is not functioning adequately. When this occurs, your body is unable to prevent the growth of cancerous endometrial cells.

At CTCA, our cancer doctors can use biotherapy to help repair, stimulate or enhance your body’s immune response. Treatments are used either alone or in conjunction with other modalities, such as surgery, radiation and chemotherapy.

Biotherapy may be used to:

  • Stop or interfere with processes that permit growth of cancerous uterine cells
  • Make uterine cancer cells more recognizable, and therefore more susceptible, to destruction by your immune system
  • Boost the killing power of your immune system cells, such as T-cells, NK-cells and macrophages
  • Alter the growth pattern of uterine cancer cells to promote behavior like that of healthy cells
  • Block or reverse the process that changes a normal cell or precancerous cell into a cancerous cell
  • Enhance your immune system's ability to help repair or replace normal cells damaged or destroyed by other forms of uterine cancer treatment (e.g., chemotherapy, radiation)
  • Prevent uterine cancer cells from spreading to other parts of your body
