An anoscopy is performed if your doctor finds any abnormalities during a digital rectum exam (DRE). As an endoscopic test, an anoscopy allows your doctor to see the abnormalities using a thin, lighted, flexible tube called an anoscope. The anoscope is lubricated before being placed a few inches into the rectum. You may feel some discomfort during the procedure. If needed, your doctor would take a sample for a biopsy.
