Choosing a Breast Cancer Treatment Center

Choosing the breast cancer treatment center that will administer your treatment for breast cancer is a very important decision. It is key that you not only strongly believe in your treatment plan, but also in those administering it. If you have doubts or concerns, it is important that you voice them and that your care team takes them into consideration when creating your treatment plan. Although it may be difficult, if you are currently receiving treatment for breast cancer, or are about to start, and do not believe that you will be able to receive the best care available, you need to start exploring your options. After all, this is your life, and the most important thing is that you are comfortable and have confidence in the treatment you receive.

At CTCA we know how important this decision is, and would be honored to work with you to determine what treatment for breast cancer best meets your needs. The CTCA team is not here to decide what treatment for breast cancer you should pursue. Our mission is to provide all the information and support you need to determine what the best treatment for breast cancer is for you. This is an important decision and one that should be made by you, with the assistance of your doctors. There is no "one size fits all" philosophy at Cancer Treatment Centers of America. You are an individual and you should be treated as such.

Treatments for Breast Cancer - Radiation Therapy

Radiation treatment, or therapy, is just one of the treatment options available to you. Whether administered externally or internally, the ultimate goal of this treatment for breast cancer is to eliminate any cancerous cells that might remain in your body. Your team will work with you to determine which form of radiation treatment for breast cancer may be best suited for you.

External radiation treatment for breast cancer begins by determining which specific area of your body needs to be targeted. Computed tomography (CT) allows our doctors to image and reconstruct the tumor and the surrounding tissue in three dimensions. The radiation beams can then be shaped to the contour of the treatment area. During radiation treatment for breast cancer, high-energy x-ray beams focus on the breast specifically in the area of the tumor. The radiation actually damages the DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) of the cancer cells and weakens/destroys them so they are unable to reproduce.

If you and your doctor decide that internal radiation is the best option for you, you may be a candidate for a form of brachytherapy called MammoSite. This type of brachytherapy, although not suitable for everyone, involves a single catheter with a balloon. This balloon is placed in the lumpectomy cavity to treat just that surrounding tissue around the cavity of the tumor. This treatment for breast cancer is normally delivered in multiple doses over a period of days.

Innovative New Treatments for Breast Cancer

At CTCA we understand that new advances are continually evolving and reshaping the science of medicine and how it is delivered. That is why our dedicated team of experts makes sure they are always up-to-date with the most current treatments and medical advances. By staying current, our cancer specialists are able to not only provide you with the most current traditional cancer treatment methods, but also to integrate these treatment methods with innovative complementary and alternative therapies to create a comprehensive treatment plan - all under one roof.
