Transitional cell carcinoma is a type of cancer that develops in the transitional cells of the body. These cells line the inside of many organs, including the bladder, kidneys and urethra. Transitional cells vary in shape and can stretch without breaking apart.

Transitional cell carcinoma typically occurs in the urinary tract. It is the most common type of bladder cancer and accounts for the majority of kidney cancers that develop in the renal pelvis (the area at the center of the kidney that collects urine). Transitional cell carcinoma may also be a type of ovarian cancer .

In the early stages, there may be no symptoms of transitional cell carcinoma. Some people with transitional cell carcinoma pass blood in the urine and notice a change in urinary frequency. Risk factors for transitional cell carcinoma include: tobacco use, exposure to certain chemicals and chronic use of certain pain medicines. The risk of developing transitional cell carcinoma is higher in men than women and increases with age.

Detection of transitional cell carcinoma depends on where it occurs in the body. To learn more about how we diagnose and treat transitional cell carcinoma, please visit the specific cancer section: bladder cancer , kidney cancer and ovarian cancer .
