Information on Tongue Cancer

Tongue cancer (i.e., oropharyngeal cancer), like most of the other oral cancers, is a squamous cell carcinoma. Tongue cancer and other oral cancers usually occur in people over 45 years of age. Tongue cancer has been known to occur in younger people, but they have less of a risk.

Regular checkups by your doctor or dentist should be able to detect some of the signs of tongue cancer. Your doctor will check the health of the tissues in your mouth, and check the sides and underneath of your tongue for the possibility of tongue cancer.

If your doctor sees something that makes them suspect that you have tongue cancer, they will likely refer you to an oral surgeon or ear, nose and throat surgeon for a tongue cancer examination. A small sample of tissue may be removed to look for cancer cells, a procedure known as a biopsy. A biopsy is the only sure way to determine the presence of tongue cancer.

Tongue Cancer Staging

If you are diagnosed with tongue cancer, your doctor will need to know the stage (extent) of the disease in order to plan the best tongue cancer treatment. Your doctor will use staging tests and examinations to determine the size of the tumor, and if the tongue cancer has spread to other organs in the body. Your doctor may use lab tests, endoscopy, or imaging tests to determine the stage of the tongue cancer.
