Thyroid cancer is a fairly rare form of cancer that accounts for only about one percent of all cancers. The thyroid gland, located at the base of the throat, produces hormones that keep the body functioning in a normal fashion. Thyroid cancer develops from cells of the thyroid gland. If thyroid cancer is not treated, cancer cells may break away and spread to other parts of the body. Exactly what causes most cases of thyroid cancer is yet unknown. However, one known risk factor for thyroid cancer is exposure to radiation during childhood.
Thyroid Cancer: What to Look For
Symptoms of thyroid cancer may include:
- A lump or swelling in the front of the neck or in other parts of the neck
- Pain in the neck
- Trouble swallowing or breathing
- Persistent cough
In many cases, thyroid cancer symptoms are caused by a less serious ailment. However, only a doctor can make that diagnosis. If you experience any of the above thyroid cancer symptoms for an extended period of time, please visit your doctor.
