External Beam Radiation Therapy (EBRT) for Testicular Cancer
The primary type of radiation therapy we use at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) for the treatment of testicular cancer is external beam radiation therapy (EBRT).
EBRT delivers high-energy rays to tumors, using a special X-ray machine called a linear accelerator. This machine allows radiation to be delivered from any angle and shapes radiation beams to conform to the contour of testicular tumors.
Outpatient Treatment with EBRT
One of the advantages of EBRT is that you can remain an outpatient throughout your treatment. Each treatment takes just a few minutes to be delivered, and is usually given five days a week, over a course of six to eight weeks.
In addition, radiation does not carry the standard risks or complications that accompany major surgery, such as surgical bleeding, post-operative pain or the risk of stroke, heart attack or blood clot.
