Red blood cells

The blood cells that carry oxygen to organs and tissues throughout the body. Red blood cells (also called RBCs or erythrocytes) are generated in the bone marrow and are the most common blood cell in the body. Red blood cells contain the protein hemoglobin, which allows the cells to transport oxygen, and gives the cells their red color. Anemia, which occurs when the body's red blood cell count is low, is a common side effect of cancer and/or cancer treatment.
