Platelets

Blood cells which regulate the formation of blood clots to help prevent bleeding. Platelets come from special cells called megakaryocytes, which are mainly found in the plasma of bone marrow. Some forms of cancer treatment, such as chemotherapy, can cause low platelet counts (called thrombocytopenia), which carries the risk of excessive bleeding. In some situations, a low platelet count is treated with medications, or with a blood or platelet transfusion.
