Upper gastrointestinal series for stomach cancer

Upper gastrointestinal series for stomach cancer

If your doctor identifies blockages or abnormal areas on the X-rays of your digestive tract, the next step may be an endoscopic procedure or another diagnostic imaging test for stomach cancer.

What is an upper gastrointestinal series?

For this test, X-rays are taken of your upper digestive tract to identify blockages. You first drink a chalky solution containing barium. The solution travels down your digestive tract, coating your esophagus, stomach and small intestine. A series of X-rays are then taken. The X-rays do not pass through the barium-coated organs, producing images which show abnormal areas your doctors may need to look at more closely.
