TomoTherapy®

Radiation oncology teams at CTCA hospitals use TomoTherapy® to target cancer and minimize radiation exposure to healthy tissue. Listen to Dr. Bernard Eden talk about this advanced technology.

TomoTherapy® Treatment for Stomach Cancer

TomoTherapy® takes intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) to the next level. It integrates 3D computed tomography (CT) technology with sophisticated tools for planning and delivering radiation therapy.

The TomoTherapy Highly Integrated Adaptive Radiotherapy (HI-ART) system’s built-in CT scanner confirms the exact shape and position of your tumor minutes before it delivers treatment. If your tumor has shifted, or changed size or shape since your last TomoTherapy treatment, adjustments are made to the system. This enables it to deliver radiation with pinpoint precision, protecting nearby healthy organs and tissue (e.g., pancreas, kidneys, spinal cord).

Much like the capabilities of RapidArc on Varian’s Trilogy, TomoTherapy treatment targets hard-to-reach tumors from all angles. It revolves 360 degrees around you to deliver radiation treatment.

The intensity and direction of TomoTherapy’s radiation beams can be modified during treatment. Furthermore, with its innovative “slice therapy” approach, TomoTherapy treats tumors layer by layer.

TomoTherapy radiation may offer new treatment options for stomach cancer patients who have reached their maximum tolerance dosage of conventional radiation therapy. For patients experiencing recurrent stomach cancer, TomoTherapy treatment may also be ideal. It can retreat previously radiated areas of the body that have a cancer recurrence.
