Stomach Cancer Treatment: Biotherapy/Immunotherapy
Immunotherapy is an innovative treatment for stomach cancer available at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA). Also known as biological therapy, biotherapy or biological response modifier therapy, immunotherapy uses your body's own power of protection—the immune system—to help fight stomach cancer. Immunotherapy can either harness your body's natural healing power to directly combat stomach cancer, or it can be used indirectly to lessen the side effects that may be caused by other forms of stomach cancer treatment.
When the immune system breaks down or is not functioning adequately, it leaves your body in a weakened state that makes it easier for stomach cancer cells to develop and spread. Biotherapy, however, can repair, stimulate or enhance your body’s immune responses to help fight stomach cancer. Treatments such as interferon and colony stimulating factors can be used in conjunction with other stomach cancer treatments, such as surgery, radiation and chemotherapy.
