Squamous cell carcinoma is a type of skin cancer. Another type of skin cancer is basal cell cancer. In contrast, actinic keratosis is a common skin disorder, but it is not a cancer. However, actinic keratosis can lead to basal cell cancer or squamous cell carcinoma so it is worth mentioning here.

Squamous cell carcinoma is the presence of tumors in areas of the skin that have been in the sun. Squamous cell carcinoma often appears on top of the nose, forehead, lower lip, and/or hands. Squamous cell carcinoma tumors may also appear in areas of the skin that have been burned, exposed to chemicals, or had x-ray treatments.

Squamous cell carcinoma often appears as a firm red bump that may bleed, feels scaly, and may develop a crust. Squamous cell carcinoma may also spread to nearby lymph nodes.

What is Squamous Cell Skin Cancer?

Squamous cell skin cancer is a form of skin cancer that usually results from long-term damage to the skin by the sun. Squamous cell skin cancer spreads slowly, but if it is not treated early, it can spread to other parts of the body. Squamous cell skin cancer is most often seen on areas of the body that have been exposed to excessive sun. Often this cancer appears as a firm red bump or ulceration of the skin that does not heal. Squamous cell skin cancer can spread to lymph nodes in surrounding areas.

Causes and Prevention of Squamous Cell Skin Cancer

The most noted cause for squamous cell skin cancer is repeated, prolonged exposure to the sun. This repeated and prolonged exposure can damage the skin and cause squamous cell skin cancer. The most effective way to prevent squamous cell skin cancer is to be aware of the time you spend in the sun. Make sure to try to protect your skin as much as possible.
