Naturopathic Medicine for Spinal Cancer
Because of the variety of tumors that can form in the spinal cord and column and the different treatments involved, patients may experience a range of symptoms. Naturopathic medicine can help reduce these symptoms, strengthen the immune system and support the healing process.
Developing Your Naturopathic Plan
When you arrive at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA), you’ll have the opportunity to meet with a naturopathic oncology provider. Your naturopath will review your medical history and diagnostic tests, including imaging and biopsy tests.
They’ll collaborate with your oncologists to develop a naturopathic plan that supports your spinal cancer treatment. Your plan may include any of the following natural therapies:
- Dietary supplements (e.g., vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, amino acids)
- Botanical medicine (herbs)
- Homeopathic medicines
- Hydrotherapy (We typically recommend various types of home treatments)
- Detoxification therapies
- Essential oils (e.g., aromatherapy inhalers or topical products)
Supporting Your Spinal Cancer Treatment
Your naturopathic plan will be based on your unique needs. For example, if you undergo surgery, your naturopath can provide pre- and post-surgical support using homeopathics and nutritional supplements, to promote wound healing and decrease the risk of complications.
If you receive radiation therapy, your naturopath may recommend herbs, homeopathics and nutritional supplements to help reduce side effects.
If you undergo chemotherapy, your naturopath may provide therapies to help prevent or reduce chemotherapy-related side effects. Throughout your care, our experts in naturopathic medicine may also provide supplements that have evidenced-based benefits.
Providing Ongoing Support & Expertise
Throughout your spinal cancer treatment, your naturopath will collaborate with your oncologists to monitor your supplement intake and ensure safety with potential drug-herb and drug-nutrient interactions, such as alpha lipoic acid or N-acetylcysteine, which are contraindicated for spinal cancer.
After spinal cancer treatment, your naturopath may recommend herbs, supplements and homeopathics to help prevent the recurrence and help you manage any residual side effects. Once you return home, the naturopathic medicine team will continue to be available by phone to address underlying health issues related to your cancer treatment.
